As time goes by, we become witnesses to radical shifts in fashion trends. Some of them stick with us for some time and then completely disappear from our consciousness. Some of them make a welcome return every few decades, and some of them never really go anywhere.
In the case of bedrooms, that would be vintage style. If you think about it for a while, it does makes sense. Vintage style radiates with certain old-school warmth, beauty, nostalgia, and altogether laid-back attitude. And laying back is, in the end, what your bedroom serves for.
So allow yourself to be creative and bring some of that romantic echo of the times past into your home. Although it might sound as an expensive undertaking, overhauling your bedroom vintage style can be performed on budget. You just need to follow a few simple principles.
Decorating your walls
The overall look you want to achieve is painted with soft and delicate colors, so be sure that your walls provide you with a good backdrop for later arrangements.
Painting your walls in white, cream or even with subtle shades of pink, green or blue should not be hard nor expensive. If you’re feeling creative, you can alternatively opt for wallpapers, or even the combination of both. Be sure though that wallpapers aren’t in contrast with the look you want to get.
Opting for the imagery showing such animals as lambs and birds, or, even better, floral motives will provide you with the desired results. Hanging a picture on a wall might ruin the experience unless it’s properly framed.
Inhabiting your room with furniture
Building upon the foundations you’ve just laid, you will now have to move in the furniture. You want simple pieces, devoid of sharp edges as much as possible, reminiscent of the ones from the beginning of the past century. They are not that hard to obtain and can be easily bought at vintage shops, antique fairs or even in a flea market.
If they require some painting, you should follow the same color pattern as the one on your walls. If you are instead trying to deliberately push a vintage look a little bit, you should probably leave them the way they are, if their color matches your plans, of course. If not, sand down some edges after the paint has dried to accomplish that worn out, rugged look.
Centerpiece of your bedroom
We are, of course, talking about your bed, which should be gold, bronze or iron, but a wooden bed will accompany vintage style just as good. If you are forced to go for a more budget-friendly solution, you can achieve the same feel by dressing your bed in lace, taffeta, organza or soft cotton and make it even more vintage with a down duvet and crochet blanket.
Covering your bed with cushions in floral patterns and subtle silhouettes, such as peacocks, is a must-do.
How to achieve a vintage floor?
Arranging your floor ended up unfairly low here on our to-do list, and that is simply because we assume you are searching for a more economic solution than completely replacing your floor.
If you are not, go for the antique wood, also known as reclaimed wood. If you, on the other hand, feel that your floor is not vintage enough (or even too vintage for your taste) but don’t want to spend too much money, there is nothing simpler than to cover it completely with floor rugs, or a big soft white or cream carpet.
Devil in the details
As we all know, details can make or break any style so avoid having too much, if any, modern things in your bedroom. White tech will, of course, stand out less than black. Having some books, old clocks, curtains, jewelry boxes or even a nice music box in a room will, on the other side, enhance the effect you want to accomplish.
You can be really creative here, just be sure that you are following the basic principles we mentioned before.
Though it may seem rather complicated to embark on such a decorating adventure, once you’ve gotten the hang of it, it will be a piece of cake. And when all the work is done, you can relax in your charming vintage escape and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
