6 Basic Gun Safety Tips Every Gun Owner Must Understand

June 13, 2014 by Karleia Steiner 1 Comment

If you own a gun, you must take the time to learn how to protect yourself and others. In fact, any legal gun owner should already know the basics. While this is true, it is always a good idea to think about what you need to do.

With this in mind, here are six basic gun safety tips every gun owner must understand to the fullest.

Practice

Without a doubt, if you want to shoot a gun intelligently, you should find a gun range. When going to a quality gun range,  you can learn the right methods to shoot a gun.

Over time, when you practice them, you are unlikely to make a mistake.

Always loaded

Whether you know it to be true or not, you should always treat a gun as if it is loaded. With this, you will never point it at a person or in the wrong direction. Remember, once you pick it up, pretend it is loaded.

Never point at a human

If you hold a gun, always point it at the floor or in another safe direction. Do not, under any circumstances, point the gun in the direction of another person. This is a huge mistake and can cause a lot of problems.

Never drink or do drugs with guns around

While some people break this rule, it is not wise. Sadly, when playing with guns, some people will grab a beer or two and think it is okay. It is not. Instead, when one is drinking or doing drugs, they should put their guns away in a hard-to-reach area.

Lock

If you have children or other people in the house who should not handle guns, you must lock them in a hard-to-find place. Otherwise, if they find the firearms, they may cause issues. Luckily, you should not have a hard time finding an inexpensive lock meeting your needs.

Either way, when hidden from children or unstable people, you can avoid problems.

Training courses

If you struggle in any way, you should take a training course. When attending classes, you can learn firearm safety and avoid any common mistakes. This is a wise investment to make as one slip-up can cause serious injury or death.

With these six easy-to-follow tips, you can keep you and your family safe. You must remember, a gun is dangerous, and it is wise to take a proactive approach if you want to keep your family out of harm’s way.

So many people who have guns are not aware of any safety tips. One of my friends does not even have a gun safe to hide his guns from children!
