No matter what neighborhood you live in, there is always at least some concern about a break-in. Fortunately, there are many steps you can take to keep both your family and your possessions safe from break-ins and keep your peace of mind.
Security systems
One of the most obvious options for preventing break-ins is investing in a home security system. These systems can include anything from a simple alarm to security cameras. If an alarm is activated, it will both produce a loud noise to startle away intruders and contact the alarm company so someone will check in on the situation.
You can also get a price quote from them and a list of other available services, such as monitoring home security cameras from your laptop or smartphone while you are away.
Home automation
Most people have heard of leaving a light on when you leave the house to make it look like someone is home. Home automation gives you the ability to control multiple different lights and appliances, such as the television, remotely through the Internet.
This is often a more cost effective and less obvious method for people on longer vacations. You don’t have the electric bill or suspicious look of leaving one light on the entire time you’re gone.
You can also get thermostat automation, which will allow you to decrease or turn off your heating and cooling while you’re away and return it to a comfortable temperature remotely before you return home.
Motion sensitive lights
Burglars are looking for the easiest target when they look at houses. Adding motion-activated flood lights around your house may make it too risky for burglars to try. It also gives your neighbors a better chance of seeing suspicious activity while you’re away or asleep.
Beware of what you post online
In this technological age, most people have at least some personal information online, and this can sometimes be used against us. Make your Facebook or other social media site private for just you and your friends.
Avoid posting pictures of inside your house that may show potential thieves where you keep your valuables and avoid posting about your vacation until you come back home so strangers don’t know you’re out of town.
Get a dog (or look like you have one)
The sound of a barking dog or signs that one lives in your house are huge deterrents to burglars. If you’re looking for a pet anyway, consider a breed that has good guarding characteristics, and keep it in the house while you are away at work or asleep at night.
If you have allergies or a dog just isn’t right for you, consider putting a dog bowl or chain in your front yard. These items imply that there is a dog in the house and might convince potential robbers to pick an easier victim.
Preventing break-ins is all about making sure your house looks like it’s not worth the trouble. Thieves are looking for the easiest mark, so even small steps, like having a security system sign whether or not you have the system, or a dog bowl whether or not you have a dog, can increase the security of your home.
